Job Details

A fully funded studentship awarded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership (SCDTP) commencing in 2018/19 Academic Year.

Supervisory Team:

Professor Chris Armstrong (Politics & International Relations, Lead Supervisor) (C.Armstrong@soton.ac.uk), Doctor Fiona Woollard (Philosophy)

Avoiding dangerous climate change is an urgent priority. But mitigation strategies can themselves produce injustices. In particular, leaving fossil fuels in the ground will produce losses for many people currently dependent upon their extraction for their livelihoods. This project will investigate what claims the losers from decarbonisation might have to assistance from either their own state or from the international community, especially when the effect of decarbonisation is to prolong their poverty. You will use the skills of political theory and political philosophy to develop an account of the appropriate way to theorise, and to respond to, these losses.

Skills Required

The research questions are in the first instance normative inquiries, which can be pursued with the tools provided by political theory and philosophy. But a good understanding of the nature of climate change, and of the potential economic impacts of decarbonisation, will also be important. The University has abundant experience in the technical aspects of both climate change, and climate change mitigation.

Funding

South Coast DTP Funding provides an annual maintenance grant (tax free) of £14553 (2017/18 RCUK rate), plus payment of all programme fees.  Other funding available for SCDTP funded students can be found on the SCDTP website (www.southcoastdtp.ac.uk).
