UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH CENTRE (UPBRC)

CLINICAL ASSISTANT (THREE-YEAR CONTRACT APPOINTMENT)

PEROMNES POST LEVEL 10

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:

  • Render laboratory animal veterinary services in the University of Pretoria Biomedical Research Centre (UPBRC);
  • Play an active role in the health monitoring of laboratory animals under controlled environmental conditions;
  • Play an active role in UPBRC research projects, with emphasis on ensuring compliance with animal ethics standards;
  • Play an active role in facilitation of contract research projects for external clients such as the South African Pharmaceutical and Agrichemical industries;
  • Play an active role in the teaching and training of staff and students;
  • Enrol for MMedVet (LAS) and meet learning outcomes required for specialist training in Laboratory Animal Science;
  • Perform departmental administrative and other duties as determined by the Director.
  • Participate in the Animal Ethics Committee of the University.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  1. BVSc/BVMCh degree or an appropriate equivalent veterinary qualification;
  2. Registered or eligible for authorisation or registerable at time of application as a veterinarian with the South African Veterinary Council;
  3. Two years of general veterinary practice or equivalent;
  4. Compliance with entry requirements for a MMedVet programme in the Department of Paraclinical Sciences.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  1. Appropriate language and communication skills;
  2. Good interpersonal skills;
  3. Out-of-hours availability for rotational clinical services;
  4. Computer literacy in MS Office.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  1. Clinical experience with rodents, rabbits, or other exotic species;
  2. Experience or exposure to research within an academic environment.

 

The all-inclusive remuneration package for this contract position will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines.
