RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be expected to:

  • Ensure that all communication about the University contributes significantly to enhancing the institution’s reputation amongst all its internal and external stakeholders;
  • Co-ordinate all communication emanating from the University across internal and external communication channels;
  • Generate content for official University media releases, news content and internal messages;
  • Manage and oversee the production and publication of the University’s printed and digital publications to ensure an integrated approach and alignment with University communication and marketing strategies;
  • Take responsibility for the distribution of news to all news platforms and publications, including the management of news for websites, social media and traditional media;
  • Manage and co-ordinate crisis communication ;
  • Acts as spokesperson for the University and co-ordinates the activities of all other University–appointed spokespeople.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Honours degree in Journalism, Communication, Marketing or another related discipline;
  • At minimum of five years in the following:
    • Experience in news reporting / newsroom management / publication production / copy and/or photo editing;
    • Experience as a writer, editor or in public relations at a college, university, news media organization, government agency or other large, complex knowledge-based organization;
    • Experience in public speaking;
    • Applied knowledge and experience in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint (intermediate level) and graphics or presentation software.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Understanding of the news and media landscape;
  • Appropriate verbal and written language and professional communication skills;
  • Competence in any one of South Africa’s official languages;
  • Professional communication skills – written and verbal;
  • Organising and prioritising skills;
  • Supervisory and administrative skills;
  • Crisis communication;
  • Ability to work under pressure without compromising detail and accuracy;
  • Ability to build credibility, establish rapport, and maintain communication with senior management, staff members and student entities at multiple levels, as well as with external stakeholders;
  • Demonstrated leadership competencies;
  • Ability to work independently and handle simultaneous assignments with success and accuracy;
  • Innovative and creative;
  • Ability to work on own initiative and as member of a team;
  • Able and willing to work, evenings and weekends, as required;
  • Problem-solving skills;
  • Ability to meet demanding targets within tight deadlines.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Master’s degree in Journalism, Communication, Marketing or a related discipline;
  • Knowledge of and experience in science communication and writing;
  • Member of the Public Relations Institute of Southern Africa;
  • Member of Toastmasters.

 

PLEASE NOTE:

All shortlisted candidates may be required to participate in relevant skills assessments as part of the selection process.

 

The total remuneration package for this position ranges from approximately R 617 910 to R 766 527 as determined by UP policy guidelines. (These amounts include the University’s contributions to standard UP benefits, namely provident fund, group life and funeral cover, but exclude contributions to medical aid, as the latter varies per employee.) UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
