RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Senior Manager Alumni Relations acts as co-ordinator, day-to-day representative, and the spokesperson and “face” of UP’s alumni activities. He/she actively promotes and enhances the loyalty and support of all graduates as one of the important stakeholder groups of the University of Pretoria. The manager does this through establishing and sustaining mutually beneficial relationships with alumni, and by promoting the interests of and soliciting support of alumni for their Alma Mater. 

The Senior Manager Alumni Relations is responsible for:

  • The development, execution and management of the Alumni Relations (AR) part of the strategic plan of the Department of University Relations in consultation with the Deputy Director: Relationship Management & Fundraising (RM &F) as well as the Director: University Relations as line managers;
  • The support of and execution of fundraising campaigns and projects amongst alumni in support of UP in cooperation with the (RM &F) division. 
  • The initiation, co-ordination and execution of communication actions with alumni, public relations campaigns and the building of strategic relationships with alumni in consultation with the Deputy-Director: Communication and Marketing;
  • Ensuring that the integrity of the information supplied to DD: Digital Technology and the Database team is upheld and maintained.
  • The marketing of services and projects and co-ordination of alumni activities, programmes and projects; effective functioning of the AR unit through continuous operational management in co-operation with the Deputy Director: Relationship Management and Fundraising.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A relevant honours degree (e.g. Business management, Public Relations, Communication and other related fields) or a postgraduate diploma equivalent; 
  • At least five years’ experience, of which at least two years is management experience in a corporate environment/tertiary institution;
  • A valid drivers’ licence.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Knowledge of and expertise in:
    • Alumni relations;
    • Strategic planning;
    • Relationship building;
    • Project management;
    • Financial management;
    • Communication and event management;
    • Resource management; 
  • Computer literate;
  • Proven ability to build, manage and develop key  internal and external stakeholders, and foster client and donor relationships
  • Ability to meet demanding targets within deadlines;
  • Management and leadership skills;
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Strategic thinking and strong interpersonal skills;
  • Professional conduct and results oriented.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Management qualification or Master’s Degree in Communication, Communication, Management, Public Relations, or Social Sciences;
  • Knowledge of fundraising in the higher education sector.

 

PLEASE NOTE:

The total remuneration package for this position ranges from approximately R 617 910 to R 766 527 as determined by UP policy guidelines. (These amounts include the University’s contributions to standard UP benefits, namely provident fund, group life and funeral cover, but exclude contributions to medical aid, as the latter varies per employee.) UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
