SENIOR MEDIA RELATIONS SPECIALIST
PEROMNES POST LEVEL 7

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The purpose of this post is to contribute to the management of the University of Pretoria’s reputation by leveraging off and optimising on external, as well as internal media opportunities.
The incumbent will contribute to the promotion of the reputation of the University of Pretoria by enhancing its image and distinctive identity to its external stakeholders through its various academic, research and community engagement projects and programmes, as well as key cultural and sport events, staff expertise and student achievements. The role will require the proactive management of external and internal communication. It will also include the need to manage crisis communication strategies and execution.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Marketing and Communication, Journalism or another related discipline;
- At least five years’ experience in Media/Public Relations in a corporate or university environment which includes:
- Experience as media practitioner or journalist, which includes deep knowledge of the media landscape;
- Operational planning and facilitation;
- Facilitation of media liaison;
- Building media relations and networks.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
- Accomplished and articulate verbal communication;
- Strategic marketing communication;
- Public relations and media relations;
- Structured and competent written communication;
- Applied knowledge and experience in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint (intermediate level) and the internet;
- Fully conversant with digital media channels, e.g. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter;
- Confident, presentable and articulate speaker committed to excellence;
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills;
- Appreciation of nuanced communication/messaging;
- Self-starter and team player;
- Attention to detail;
- Diplomatic and tactful;
- Passionate about the University and its role in society;
- Able and willing to work, evenings and weekends, as required;
- Good negotiating/persuasive skills;
- Ability to meet demanding targets within tight deadlines.
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
- Honours degree in Marketing and Communication, Journalism or a related discipline;
- At least five years of established media relationships in the business, educational and general news categories;
- At least two years of experience in managing crisis communication strategies
- At least two years’ experience in broadcasting or seasoned television/radio media analyst/commentator.
PLEASE NOTE:
All shortlisted candidates may be required to participate in relevant skills assessments as part of the selection process.
The total remuneration package for this position ranges from approximately R 506 167 to R 623 921 as determined by UP policy guidelines. (These amounts include the University’s contributions to standard UP benefits, namely provident fund, group life and funeral cover, but exclude contributions to medical aid, as the latter varies per employee.) UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
