School of Mathematics and Physics

UQ Physics is located in the School of Mathematics and Physics in the Faculty of Science. The Discipline is internationally recognised for its research excellence, and hosts a number of world-class research centres. The School of Mathematics and Physics has a total of 110 full-time academic staff members, and 21 professional staff who provide professional, technical and administrative support. The School teaches a comprehensive undergraduate program in physics, as well as performing service teaching for students of engineering and the life sciences. There is also an extensive postgraduate research program, which currently has more than one hundred Research Higher Degree students enrolled.

The Theoretical Condensed Matter Group is a vibrant group within the School of Mathematics and Physics, supporting research in the quantum many-body theory of complex materials ranging from quantum spin liquids to biophysics. The role

The successful appointee will develop theories to describe the superconductivity, antiferromagnetism and quantum spin liquid behaviour. This work will involve the development and application of numerical methods based to describe strong electronic correlations such as Density Matrix Renormalisation Group (DMRG)/Matrix Product State (MPS) or Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT) and its cluster extensions. A track record in these or related methods is desirable – but a demonstrated potential and enthusiasm to learn them is sufficient.

This position is part of the large “Discovery Grant” from the Australian Research Council and the appointee will be required to carry out research, publish scientific papers, and present the results at leading international conferences. This work will be undertaken as part of a team involving Professor Ben Powell and Professor Ross McKenzie and PhD students. The appointee will be expected to contribute to the supervision and mentor-ship of the students.

 

The person

Applicants should possess a strong track record in the theory of strongly correlated elecrons systems, superconductivity or a closely related field. This should be demonstrated by publications in leading international journals and a PhD in physics or a closely related subject. Experience with advanced numerical methods such as DMRG/MPS or DMFT calculations will be an advantage, but is not required.

 

Remuneration

This is a full-time, fixed-term appointment at Academic level A. The remuneration package will be in the range $81,545.80 - $87,535.13 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $95,408.59 - $102,416.10 p.a.).
