Job Details

PhD Supervisor:

Corin Gawith and James Gates

Deadline:

April 30th 2018

A fully-funded 3.5 year PhD studentship in the Optoelectronics Research Centre is available at the University of Southampton. The studentship will be associated with the UK National Quantum Technology Programme, specifically the Networked Quantum Information Technologies Hub (NQIT). The multi-university partnership is working towards building a quantum computer demonstrator which demonstrates a networked, hybrid light-matter approach to quantum information processing (http://nqit.ox.ac.uk/).

One of the challenges of the system is the low loss photonic switching for distributing entanglement around the quantum network. We plan to address this by combining the low loss properties of optical fibers with the mechanical stability of a planar substrate. The studentship will investigate various switch configurations using approaches that maintain the integrity of optical fibres through various processing steps. The project will make use of new manufacturing techniques developed in Southampton, towards commercially relevant devices.

This studentship will be hosted within the team of Prof. Peter Smith and the successful candidate will work closely with a friendly and engaging team of 10 postdoctoral researchers and PhD students. The project will be supervised and lead by Dr Corin Gawith and Dr James Gates.

Informal enquiries may be directed to Dr James Gates, gates@soton.ac.uk

Candidate Requirements:

Applications would be welcome from candidates holding good degrees (1st class or 2:1 honours) in physics, materials science, mechanical or electronic engineering. Experimental skills are essential. In addition to the standard EPSRC PhD studentship, this position includes an annual allowance to enable attendance at international conferences. This post is open to UK and EU citizens only, due to standard EPSRC eligibility requirements.

3.5 year Ph.D. studentship

Funding:

fees and stipend at EPSRC rate
