Job Details

You will have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in psychology with previous clinical research experience working with people with dementia including extensive use of psychometric scales. You will be phlebotomy trained with experience of biological sample preparation. You will be able to collate and analyse data and be able to maintain data records to GCP standards and prepare written reports for presentation to regulatory authorities and sponsors. You should be a highly motivated candidate, capable of independently carrying out assessments, as well as intellectually contributing to the project to achieve its goals in a timely manner. Evidence of publishing in peer-reviewed journals would be desirable.

Prof Holmes group investigates the biological basis of the development of Alzheimer’s disease with an emphasis on the role of inflammation in the development of the disease leading to the development of new treatments for the disease. This project is in close collaboration with the geriatric department at Queens University Belfast (headed by Dr Bernadette McGuiness) and the rheumatology department at University Hospital Southampton (headed by Prof Chris Edwards) and is a comprehensive longitudinal study of rheumatoid arthritis with mild cognitive impairment and the effects of disease modifying drugs on cognitive decline. The study will also examine a number of biological markers derived from blood to assess the relationship between inflammatory pathways with clinical outcomes. You will be based at Moorgreen Hospital but will be expected to work closely with the rheumatology team at University Hospital Southampton with occasional meetings in Belfast. You will collaborate with colleagues across Faculties of Medicine and Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton. The successful candidate will be given an honorary NHS contract for accessing patient samples and data relevant to the project. The candidate can expect a collegial and research-focused environment with mentoring and career development support from the PI. 

The post is available for a period of 3 years. Due to funding requirements the post can only be offered on a full-time basis.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
