Duties and responsibilities:

  • Operate the ABI3500 Genetic Analyser (sequencer) in the department, and assume responsibility for a system that includes the full process of receiving samples, analysis, returning of results to researchers, implementation of a cost model and ensuring maintenance of the apparatus.
  • Provide support to genetic research programmes, including sample collection, laboratory procedures and statistical analysis using state-of the-art approaches to the analysis of molecular genetic data.
  • Carry out routine tasks and provide all the required technical support to enable the effective functioning of genetics and forensic science laboratories.
  • Provide support to the Zebrafish research programme and holding facilities in the department.
  • Take responsibility for the departmental biobank.
  • Set up practicals, in consultation with lecturing staff and ensure all materials are available.
  • Provide general laboratory administrative support such as ordering, receiving, storing, organising and controlling laboratory stock and samples.
  • Implement and enforce adherence to health and safety regulations in laboratories as well as quality control.
  • Introduce new employees, visitors and students to laboratories and systems.
  • Write Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and risk assessments for laboratory equipment, instruments and activities.
  • Maintain an MSDS list for all laboratory chemicals and solvents.
  • Clean, maintain and operate standard laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Dispose of chemicals and waste products in a safe way.
  •  

    Inherent requirements:

    • BSc Hons in Genetics with a good academic record or a closely related field involving molecular genetics.

     

    Required competencies:

    • Experience of operating a genetic analyser.
    • Good computer skills (MS Office as well as dedicated software used for the analysis of genetic data from molecular markers).
    • Good planning and organisational skills.
    • Good interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) and the ability to function well in the university’s parallel medium and richly diverse working environment.

     

     Recommendations:

    • MSc degree in Genetics with a good academic record.
    • Experience with molecular biology equipment and related protocols (including RNA and DNA preparation, RNA and DNA quantification, PCR and sequencing).
    • A good understanding of the theory underlying DNA sequencing.
    • A good track record of independent research and data analysis.
    • Relevant practical working experience in a GPO-based laboratory.
    • Awareness of GLP/ISO 17025 standards. 
    • Familiarity with the handling of chemicals and scientific equipment.
