Job Details

The School of Biological Sciences

The University of Queensland has a wonderful research environment, attracting top grades in the national assessment of research quality in all biological disciplines and economics.  The School of Biological Sciences is one of the largest Schools of this type in Australia with 50 full-time academic staff.  The School provides unique opportunities for study or research in plant and animal biology with research programs spanning ecology, molecular plant sciences, marine biology, entomology, and genetics & evolution.

The role

Spatial modellor and GIS analyst to join a multi-disciplinary team who are working with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority to develop a Guidance System for Resilience-Based Management.

The position will forecast the response of coral reefs to management interventions and optimise management response given the current and projected states of the ecosystem. Thus, the research activities require the integration of field data on reef state, GIS, ecological models and larval connectivity. This is a great opportunity to undertake applied ecological research that ties closely to management and also develop research partnerships between UQ, AIMS and CSIRO, all of whom are partnering on the project. The post will run for nearly 3 years and will start in the first quarter of 2018. The position holder will work as part of a team and receive strong mentoring and training in the nuances of connectivity modelling and coral reef ecology (if required). Papers will be written for both ecological and conservation audiences.

The position starts 1st February 2018 or as soon as is practicable thereafter.

The person

Applicants will ideally have a PhD in spatial ecosystem modelling with GIS expertise and familiarity with placing data on Google Earth. They will have good programming skills. Exceptions will be made for applicants with a master’s degree but PhD-equivalent experience in modelling wildlife populations that can be transferred easily to marine ecosystems. A demonstrated interest in coral reef and/or marine ecosystems would be an advantage.

The University of Queensland values diversity and inclusion. Applications are particularly encouraged from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Remuneration

This is a full-time, fixed term (33 month) appointment at Academic level A. The remuneration package will be in the range $81,545.80- $87,535.13p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $95,408.59 - $ 102,416.10p.a.).
