DIRECTOR
GRAHAM SUSTAINABILITY INSTITUTE
UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN
ANN ARBOR
The University of Michigan, one of the world’s premier research universities with tremendous breadth and depth of academic excellence, invites nominations and applications for the Director of the Graham Sustainability Institute.
The University of Michigan is engaged in an exciting realignment of sustainability work across the UM campus, spanning education, research, engagement and university operations. Integral to this vision is the Graham Sustainability Institute, whose mission is to serve as a boundary organization that bridges external stakeholders with the internal expertise of UM’s cross-campus scholarship and problem-solving capacity, with the goal of fostering and co-developing sustainability solutions at local to global scale.
The Director is responsible for programmatic and financial leadership of the Institute. The Director is expected to collaborate closely with the UM’s schools and colleges to support their research and scholarship and to engage UM sustainability work with external stakeholders that include communities, NGOs, agencies, foundations, professional organizations, businesses, companies and industry. The Director will engage with donors and program funders.
The Institute’s programs are expected to rapidly evolve to create a highly visible boundary organization that supports the strengths of on-campus academic partners, and links these partners with the knowledge and needs of off-campus partners. This includes translation of knowledge into practice, needs assessment and co-production of knowledge and practices that address the needs of external stakeholders. The Institute will facilitate collaboration and knowledge flow within the UM and between the UM and the community of public policy and practice.
The Graham Sustainability Institute is a unit within the Provost Office, with the Director reporting to a Vice Provost. The Director will seek input from stakeholders on- and off-campus to reach strategic decisions that align the Institute within the broader UM sustainability strategy in ways that maximize the Institute’s effectiveness. An external advisory board will aid in ensuring robust partnerships off-campus for both the Institute and UM’s sustainability work broadly.
The Director must be an enthusiastic, charismatic leader who can build networks among stakeholders in the world of both sustainability practice and academia, including with potential donors and funders. The Director must have experience engaging with such stakeholders and decision-makers in the co-development of knowledge and solutions needed to implement sustainability practices.
