Aga Khan University (AKU) was chartered in 1983 as Pakistan's first private international university. Its Faculty of Health Sciences was planned with the support of Harvard University, McGill University and McMaster University, and presently includes a Medical College and a School of Nursing, which are located together with their principal teaching site, the Aga Khan University Hospital, on an 84-acre campus in Karachi, Pakistan.

In addition to Pakistan, the University offers medical and nursing programmes in Kenya,Tanzania, Uganda and Afghanistan. It also has two Institutes for Educational  Development based in Karachi and Dar es Salaam, the Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilizations based in London, UK, the Graduate School of Media and Communications, the East African Institute, and the Institute for Human Development. The Faculty of Arts and Sciences is in the planning stages and will feature campuses in Arusha, Tanzania and Karachi, Pakistan.

The AKU Medical College, Pakistan offers an MBBS programme, an interdisciplinary PhD programme in health sciences, several Master’s programmes, as well as 34 residencies and 26 fellowships in clinical disciplines. It has a well-developed community health programme with its own teaching and research sites in Karachi, and works closely with Aga Khan Health Services hospitals and clinics in Pakistan.

AKU attaches great emphasis to the professional, personal and intellectual development of students, so that its graduates become contributing members and leaders of society. Faculty, students and staff are devoted to the highest standard of education, scholarship and research. Research and Scholarship in all academic units, continues to take on increasing importance and the University is competitive internationally in a number of research areas.

 

Responsibilities

The Dean reports to the Provost for all academic matters and works closely with the Dean of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Pakistan, senior medical leadership on other campuses of the University, the CEO of the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi and other senior hospital managers, the Vice President for Health Services, the Vice President Finance and Chief Financial Officer, the Vice President Human Resources, and the President of the University.

The Dean is responsible for providing leadership for the overall operations of the Medical College, and for its faculty, staff, students and programmes of activities.  Duties will include:

  • Ensuring the quality, relevance and impact of the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate education and clinical training in the Medical College, including the evaluation and monitoring of such activities

  • Promoting and ensuring the quality and relevance of research, publications, conferences and institutional linkages in accordance with the guidelines defined by the University

  • Fostering a research ethos that is collaborative and multidisciplinary

  • Administering the admission, progression and certification of the students in the Medical College

  • Developing innovative approaches, including e-learning simulation in medical education focused around the new Centre for Innovation in Medical Education, in particular cooperating with the University’s new Faculty of Arts and Sciences to broaden students’ educational experience

  • Responsibility for the prudent management and deployment of financial and human resources within the Medical College

  • Leading strategic planning for the College and participating in such planning for the University, and of the Faculty of Health Sciences, in particular

  • Supporting the professional welfare of faculty, and ensuring opportunities for meaningful participation in the life of the University

  • Recruiting, developing, promoting and evaluating faculty and senior administrators in the Medical College, in accordance with the University’s policies

  • Supporting the personal and professional welfare of students, including through arts, culture, sports and publications

  • Ensuring collaboration of faculty with the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi to assure quality of service in health care, and to contribute to planning and development of the Hospital and its priorities

  • Participating in planning and development of the University and resource development activities, as a member of the University’s senior management team

  • Working cooperatively with colleagues in East Africa to develop the University’s health sciences activities there and identifying and promoting areas of collaboration

  • Providing leadership and support to the University’s medically related activities in Afghanistan and elsewhere

  • Acting as a spokesperson and champion for medical education especially in Pakistan and Central Asia, both within AKU and externally, including government relations and engagement with the Pakistan Medical and Dental Association and other governing bodies

  • Overseeing the delivery of a significant schedule of Continuing Medical Education programmes so that that they are sustainable, high quality courses, effectively managed and delivered.

 

Requirements

You should have appropriate professional qualifications and substantial experience in education, research, professional service, faculty development and leadership in academic administration. He/she should have a record of high achievement in medical research published in international scientific journals, together with an understanding of the opportunities and challenges in the local environment, including the role of Aga Khan University Medical College, Pakistan as the nation’s premier centre for medical education and research, and the consequent responsibilities of leading the region in innovation, research, education and clinical service.

International experience, including in the developing world, would be an advantage. Cultural sensitivity and excellent interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on teamwork and collaboration, are required.
