Head of Projects

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the University of Bristol IT Services Division for an experienced Project and Portfolio management leader. We have recently launched a new digital strategy for the University and are looking for a highly motivated and talented individual to join our IT Senior Management Team (SMT). This is a brand new role and the successful candidate will lead on our extensive programme of work to drive the digital agenda throughout the University.

The University of Bristol is an exciting and dynamic place to work, offering a stimulating and varied professional environment in the heart of the fabulous city of Bristol. Flexible working is one of the benefits our employees most value. Higher Education presents a unique, stimulating and varied environment, where the complex digital needs and expectations of our students, academics and professional services need careful consideration.

The Role

The post holder's main responsibilities will be focussed on forming a PMO that will design and implement the IT Services Project portfolio, aligned with the University’s digital strategy.

The successful candidate will:

  1. Recruit, develop and grow a team of project managers and project support staff to deliver our digital strategy.

  2. In conjunction with key stakeholders, lead the IT Services Division in the design and implementation of our project and programme portfolio. You will ensure that the portfolio is aligned with the University strategy and is realistic, achievable, but also ambitious.

  3. Be accountable for the preparation and presentation of robust business cases at key University Committees.

  4. Direct the development of the IT project management framework in conjunction with the University’s Head of Strategic Projects and Programmes and the Head of IT Governance.

  5. Steer in-flight projects and programmes of work wherever there is a significant “digital” element, working closely with the sponsors.  You will ensure clear progress reporting over the full project lifecycle, ensuring delivery whilst managing budgets and risk.

  6. Negotiate with other members of IT SMT to ensure that projects are adequately resourced with staff from their teams over the whole lifecycle including post go-live.  Ensure an adequate level of customer engagement, particularly for agile delivery.

  7. Work with the Head of IT Governance to ensure that project plans align with IT Governance policies and standards such as architecture, information security, supplier and risk management.

Application deadline is 4th February 2018 and interviews are likely to be held between the 12th and the 16th of February.

The University is committed to creating and sustaining a fully inclusive culture.  We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and communities.
