Job Purpose

The Institute for Global Innovation (IGI) is a new and exciting investment from the University of Birmingham designed to bring together diverse strands of research with the aim of addressing the most pressing global challenges. The Institute has the following overarching vision:

“To inspire, support and deliver world leading multidisciplinary research that seeks to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges, affecting humanity at a global level.”

The IGI is in its inception phase, and the successful candidate will act as the Administrator for the Institute. In the short term, the Administrator will work alongside the Head of Projects and Partnerships, and Institute Academic Director to assist with establishing the Institute. Beyond this, the Administrator will be responsible for overseeing the day to day running of the Institute and supporting the staff associated with it.

The IGI Institute Administrator will report directly to the Head of Projects and Partnerships and will be part of the Research Support Services team at University of Birmingham. The Administrator will also be expected to work closely with the IGI’s Academic Director.

 

Person Specification

Essential

  • Administrative and office management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal. The post holder will have the ability to communicate clearly, concisely and persuasively with a variety of people both inside and outside the University, and at varying levels of seniority.
  • Good numeracy, at least to GCSE Maths or equivalent.
  • Ability to quickly understand a problem, to think laterally and to extrapolate best practice from past experience.
  • Attention to detail and pride in presentation.
  • Good IT skills, especially use of Microsoft Word, Excel, email and internet usage. The post holder should also be willing to quickly learn new software.
  • Good team working skills.
  • Flexibility to take on a wide variety of tasks with a ‘can do’ attitude.
  • Excellent multi-tasking skills in managing and coordinating multiple projects for a range of customers.
  • The ability to work with colleagues at all levels within the institution (including those at a senior level) whilst demonstrating appropriate tact and communication skills.
  • A commitment to providing a proactive, customer orientated service.
  • The drive, commitment and enthusiasm to assist in the establishment and development of a high profile research Institute with ambitions for impact at the global level.

 

Desirable

  • Educated to degree level
  • Knowledge of processes within the University of Birmingham.
