Job Details

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have an established background in soft matter and biological physics? Do you want to further your career in one of the UKs leading research intensive Universities?

We are looking for a Research Fellow to work on an EPSRC-funded project with Dr Lorna Dougan, in the Molecular and Nanoscale Physics Group, investigating the mechanics of biological systems, hierarchy of mechanical properties and the translation of mechanical properties across length scales.

You will join an exciting new research project within an interdisciplinary team to exploit engineered polyproteins in the modular design of robust, tuneable and biologically functional biomaterials. Our goal is to develop a cross-length scale approach which will translate knowledge of the nanoscale mechanics of folded proteins to the mesoscale architecture and function of novel protein networks. By understanding the physics of the building block (the folded protein) and its connectivity (the folded protein network) we will create a platform for the production of a new suite of biomaterials which will provide innovative solution in healthcare.

You will use a range of experimental techniques, including single molecule force spectroscopy, rheology and x-ray and neutron scattering to examine the structure and mechanics of biopolymers and their networks. You will explore the potential of these biomaterials in a number of potential healthcare applications, in collaboration with relevant leaders in healthcare technologies.

With a PhD (or have submitted your thesis prior to taking up the appointment) in Physics, Chemistry or a related field, you will have experience in experimental soft matter and biophysics and a developing track record of peer reviewed publications in international journals.
