Based in a world-leading research team in the Solid Mechanics Research Group (SMRG) within the School of Civil, Aerospace, and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bristol, this is an exciting opportunity to carry out research pertaining to integrity and creep behaviour of structural materials in nuclear energy systems.

The SMRG has recently been awarded research council funding for Project MAINTAiN: Multi-scAle INTegrity assessment for Advanced high-temperature Nuclear systems. This project is aimed at stimulating creep at atomistic level to predict the behaviour of large structural components valued by multi-scale experimental work.

You will carry out research pertaining to creep in the context of nuclear structural integrity at high temperature. The work could include macro- and meso-scale modelling and experimental studies. You will collaborate closely with a wide range of internal and external colleagues in order to define, plan, deliver and report on the research project. You will report and communicate your research outputs in journal papers, conferences and at workshops and meetings with our partners and collaborators.

You will work closely with academics, research associates and research students at Bristol and other academic institutions. Further, it is expected that you will work in close collaboration with colleagues in EDF Energy and Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE) and potentially other industrial partners, manage your time within a multi-disciplinary team, and ensure successful delivery of research activities. You should be willing to travel within the UK and occasionally internationally.

You will have (or soon expect to obtain) a PhD in Mechanical Engineering or Materials Science (or closely related discipline) and show significant evidence of having developed and then delivered high-quality research projects pertaining to structural integrity in an academic and/or industrial context. You will have a record of publications in academic journals; the focus of your research can be modelling/theoretical and/or experimental.


This post is offered on a full time, open-ended basis with funding for up to March 2021 in the first instance.
