Department Communication and Brand Management Assistant Officer: Internal Communication (post level 13)

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Assist with planning and execution of internal communication campaigns, including:
  • Conceptualising and planning of campaigns.
  • Messaging, writing awareness pieces, production of campaign material and implementation/posting of campaign material on identified platforms. Campaign material and platforms include:
  • campaign material (messaging, designs, videos) for the university's social media pages, including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter.
  • video recordings for campaigns to be used on the different platforms, including social media, student portal (KovsieLife), emails to students, student newsletter, etc.
  • articles for student and staff platforms (KovsieLife, student newsletter, media, web, intranet and Dumela).
  • Arrange face-to-face communication information events and activations.
  • Attend meetings with relevant role players for their inputs to the campaign (e.g. Protection Services, University Estates and Student Affairs).
  • Coordinate production of other collateral material to enhance messaging, e.g. bins on campus, bus stops, billboards, JoJo tanks, T-shirts, brochures and adverts.
  • Assist with and attend campaigns, activities, and events on the three campuses of the University of the Free State (Bloemfontein Campus, South Campus, and Qwaqwa Campus). Take photos thereof and write articles for the various communication platforms of the University of the Free State.
  • Provide assistance at public events, e.g. Open Days, Graduation Ceremonies, Official welcoming of first-years and Varsity sing-off.
  • Provide assistance with internal face-to-face communication events for students and staff, e.g. Town hall meetings, State of the University of the Free State Rector’s Engagement and the Rector addressing students.
  • Write articles for different communication platforms:
  • Write for different media platforms, providing news coverage for assigned portfolios.
  • Participate in news desk.
  • Liaise with student and staff structures regarding campus news and events, and keep staff and students informed by:
  • Sending messages received for editing.
  • Uploading these messages on various internal communication platforms for staff and students, including: Blackboard, student and staff emails on UFSNews, intranet (Digest), News Flash, and InTouch.
  • Monitor the UFSNews email platform and respond to enquiries.
  • Serve as back-up to upload messages on other internal communication platforms e.g. Student Newsletter.
  • Inherent requirements:

  • Grade 12.
  • Required competencies:

    • Good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to function with ease in the University's richly diverse working environment.
    • Advanced computer skills in MS Word, PowerPoint, and the Internet.
    • Writing skills.
    • Good organisational skills.
    • Time-management skills.
    • Ability to work under pressure and keep to deadlines.
    • Ability to work effectively in a team.
    • Ability to work independently.
    • Basic photography skills.
    • Good problem-solving skills.
    • Willingness to attend events on and off campus, after hours or on weekends.
    • Knowledge of the social media and website environment.
    • Ability to write content for social media platforms.
    • Knowledge of the university environment and events occurring throughout the year.

    Recommendations:

    • Bachelor's degree in Corporate Communication or Journalism.
    • One (1) to two (2) years' work experience in a communication or related field.

    As soon as possible.
