Job Details

The University Network team requires a Network Engineer. This role will primarily assist in maintaining and developing the edge network, which is currently built on Cisco & HP edge switches and Cisco & Aerohive wireless access points. It comprises some 1600 switches across 400 locations.

The successful candidate should have existing skills with Cisco edge switches and will be adaptable to work with other vendors’ equipment. You will be responsible for normal operational running, administering, troubleshooting and maintenance of parts of the university edge network.  A Cisco CCENT, CCT or CCNA qualification is desirable although training will be provided for any suitable candidates who do not hold any of these certifications.

Working with end-users and colleagues across various teams the role holder will perform troubleshooting of end-user connectivity issues, and will arrange fixes whenever necessary. The successful applicant will have the ability to communicate effectively about their work to people in all areas of the University, to audiences with differing levels of technical understanding.

We aim to replace the edge network on a 7-year rolling upgrade cycle, which means that the Network Engineers must replace approximately 230 edge switches a year.  This is also an opportunity to improve the topology of the network. The role holder will undertake design of areas of the edge network during upgrades and arrange installation of additional fibre and cabling to improve the network.

Growth such as new building projects and building purchases means we might add up to another 50 switches per year to the university network.  The role holder will be involved in preparing equipment lists for new buildings, obtaining quotes, and installing equipment during the commissioning phases of the building project.

The role holder will be required to work in a number of areas which the normal university staff do not access, such as plant rooms, comms rooms, switch rooms, building sites etc.  You must have a thorugh and responsible attitude to the Health and Safety of yourself and other users of these areas.

You will need to be highly motivated with demonstrable experience of enterprise scale edge switches and infrastructure.

The closing date for applications is 25th February 2018.

For informal queries please contact Ian Stubbs, Network Manager.

The University is committed to creating and sustaining a fully inclusive culture.  We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and communities.
