FIRST VETERINARY NURSE: SMALL ANIMAL MEDICINE

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Managing the clinic (hygiene, stock control, care of equipment, safety measures etc.);
  • Supervising personnel;
  • Administering and monitoring anaesthesia and sedation;
  • Performing emergency procedures (small animals);
  • Communicating with patient owners;
  • Demonstrating techniques to and instructing students and student nurses, including own team;
  • Self-development;
  • Being flexible to work in other sections in the OVAH and perform shift duties.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (DipCurAnim or Dip Vet Nursing);
  • Registration with the South African Veterinary Council;
  • Three years’ experience in veterinary nursing and clinic management.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Knowledge of the abovementioned responsibilities;
  • Negotiation skills;
  • Ability to organise and prioritise;
  • Meticulous about detail and a strong sense of responsibility;
  • Ability to work under pressure and without supervision;
  • Excellent language, communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Professionalism and a strong service orientation;
  • Physical mobility;
  • Computer literacy;
  • Willingness to perform shift duties.

 

The total remuneration package for this position ranges from approximately R 374 993 to R 446 639 as determined by UP policy guidelines. (These amounts include the University’s contributions to standard UP benefits, namely provident fund, group life and funeral cover, but exclude contributions to medical aid, as the latter varies per employee.) UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
