The School of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Sciences brings together the disciplines of cellular and molecular biology, ecology and environmental sciences, and genetics, genomics & evolutionary biology. The School is dedicated to delivering undergraduate and postgraduate education, training and research, which provides both national relevance and global outreach to networks in the public and private sectors.

We invite independently-motivated researchers to apply for a post-doctoral position to investigate the activity and targets of drugs against diverse species of malaria parasites, contributing to the development and application of next-generation antimalarials. The project is housed in the Malaria Biology laboratory, within the Research Centre for Infectious Diseases (RCID). The aim of the project is to define the stage of activity of a panel of currently used and in-development drugs against malaria parasites, define their potency against malaria field isolates, assist in identification of the mechanism of action of a novel class of drugs under development and development of next-generation analogues. The successful applicant will contribute their skills and expertise to this project, which involves close collaborations with the University of Melbourne, the University of New South Wales, the Walter & Eliza Hall Institute and the Menzies School of Health Research.

Position requirements

 To be successful you should have:

• A PhD in parasitology, mammalian cell drug development or related appropriate discipline
• Demonstrated experience in parasite or mammalian cell culture techniques
• Demonstrated experience in flow-cytometry and/or fluorescence microscopy assays and assay development
• Experience in molecular biology and/or proteomics techniques an advantage
• Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to liaise, collaborate and interact with a wide range of national and international scientific researchers
• Ability to work independently as well as effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team and to meet deadlines and complete manuscripts in a timely manner
• Experience in supervision of students in a laboratory setting.

Salary: (Level A) $82,246 - $89,425 per annum.

This fixed term contract is available immediately, for a period of 12 months with a possibility of renewal depending on funding and progress.

Superannuation: An employer contribution of 9.5% applies.
