Job Details

The project is backed by substantial UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funding (The AirGuide Photonics Programme Grant) and will involve interaction with an array of industrial collaborators. The successful candidate will join a team of around 20 researchers focussing on the field of hollow core fibres, based at the Optoelectronics Research Centre, University of Southampton, UK.

The applicant must have a strong background in photonics, preferably in optical telecommunications/datacomm and/or optical fibre amplifiers and lasers, ideally with experience and knowledge of systems measurements (e.g. generation and characterisation of advanced modulation format signals, OSNR, BER and Q-value measurements etc.). Experience of systems modelling and amplifier/laser characterisation would both also be highly desirable.

The applicant must also have a background in laboratory experimentation with critical evaluation and interpretation of data. It is expected that they will hold a PhD* or equivalent qualification related to fibre optics or photonics more broadly.

The post will be for 2 years in duration, with good prospects for further extension depending on performance.

* Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
