Faculty of Medicine

The University of Queensland's Faculty of Medicine is an internationally recognised provider of world-class education and research. The research-intensive Faculty has a gross budget of almost $300 million, employs approximately 1000 continuing and fixed-term staff (headcount), has a community of more than 4000 non-salaried academic appointees and around 3200 students (headcount).

The Faculty of Medicine offers Australia's largest medical degree program for graduates and school-leavers. Undergraduate and postgraduate programs are available in the disciplines of Medicine, Health Sciences, E-Health, Mental Health, Biomedical Sciences and Public Health.

The role

The Communications Officer will be able to communicate complex science to a range of audiences and will develop and implement effective communications strategies to connect with key internal and external stakeholders. Working closely with the Media and Communications Manager, the position provides communications support to the Faculty Marketing and Communications Team.

The person

This role is appointable at HEW Level 5 or HEW Level 6 dependent on the successful applicant.

At HEW Level 5, you will have a Bachelor degree or an equivalent combination of experience, education and/or training. You will have prior experience working with journalists and responding to media enquiries, and editing copy for a range of channels and audiences, both internal and external.

You will have an ability to research, write and produce marketing publications (in both print and digital mediums); maintain website content and identify and develop newsworthy stories for publication. Prior experience in Vision6, InDesign and Drupal (or an ability to rapidly become competent) is essential as are strong organisational skills, a high level of attention to detail and an ability to work independently or liaise with others to develop solutions. Experience in science communications would be looked upon favourably.

At HEW Level 6, you will have a Bachelor degree with subsequent relevant experience or an equivalent combination of relevant experience, education and training. You will have prior experience working with journalists (including responding to requests, pitching story ideas and managing relationships); implementing approval processes for editing copy across a range of channels; maintaining website content and identifying and developing newsworthy stories for publication. You will also have extensive experience researching, writing and producing marketing publications for a range of mediums and audiences, both internal and external. High level experience in MS Office, Vision6, InDesign and Drupal is essential as are high level organisational and analytical skills, a high level of accuracy and attention to detail and experience working both independently and within a team environment. Experience in science communications would be looked upon favourably.

Remuneration

This is a full-time, fixed term appointment until 24 August 2018 at HEW Level 5 or HEW Level 6.

At HEW Level 5, the remuneration package will be in the range $64,597.80 - $72,348.94, plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 9.5% (total package will be in the range $70,734.59 - $79,222.09).

At HEW Level 6, the remuneration package will be in the range $74,207.07 - $79,964.50, plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 9.5% (total package will be in the range $81,256.74 - $87,561.13).
