RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Evaluating user and business requirements;
  • Developing and enhancing required applications following best practices according to the Software Development Lifecycle (SDL);
  • Testing newly developed applications and integrations prior to release;
  • Implementing/releasing new platforms and applications;
  • Providing support and maintenance for existing and newly developed platforms;
  • Evaluating and installing software for required deployment;
  • Monitoring system performance and health;
  • Documenting all upgrade and improvement processes and codes;
  • The technical upkeep of systems;
  • Providing training to affected users to ensure optimal use of development/integration;
  • Integrating relevant systems according to OAI-PMH protocol;
  • Maintaining and developing professional relationships.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A three-year Information Technology (IT) degree or equivalent with three years’ experience in the software development environment; OR
  • An IT-related Diploma (e.g. National Diploma in Computer Science, Diploma in Information technology) and four years’ experience in the software development environment; OR
  • IT-related certificates (e.g. JavaMaster) and seven years’ experience in the software development environment.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Organisational skills;
  • Logical and analytical thinker;
  • Problem solving skills;
  • Ability to work under pressure;
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Experience in an Academic Library IT environment;
  • Proven knowledge and experience of Open Source Platforms;
  • Proven knowledge and experience  in Relational Databases preferably PostgreSQL, MySQL or similar;
  • Technical Competencies (e.g. Linux, PHP, CSS, JavaScript, JQuery, C#, PERL, Ruby, Python);
  • Webserver stacks (Apache, Tomcat or IIS).

 

PLEASE NOTE: All shortlisted candidates may be required to participate in relevant skills assessments as part of the selection process.

 

The total remuneration package for this position ranges from approximately R 428 306 to R 552 553 as determined by UP policy guidelines. (These amounts include the University’s contributions to standard UP benefits, namely provident fund, group life and funeral cover, but exclude contributions to medical aid, as the latter varies per employee.) UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
