LECTURER / SENIOR LECTURER (ONE POST)

BACKGROUND

The Department of Higher Education and Training's Staffing South Africa's Universities Framework (SSAUF) is a welcome and timely initiative for higher education institutions. In Phase 1 of the New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) a number of positions were allocated to the University of Pretoria (UP). The aim of this advertisement is two-fold, namely to recruit the most talented young academics to contribute to teaching and research excellence and simultaneously to improve the equity profile of the University, which constitutes an important aspect of UP's Strategic Plan. Consequently, the University invites talented applicants with a recently obtained Master's or PhD degree or who are currently enrolled or plan to enrol for a PhD degree and who are from the under-represented designated groups to apply for this position.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The incumbent will be required to:

  • Participate in a formal development programme aimed at strengthening his/her aspirations and skills as a researcher and lecturer;
  • Teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses;
  • Mentor and supervise postgraduate students;
  • Conduct  collaborative research in his/her research specialisation areas;
  • Play an active role as an academic, both nationally and internationally;
  • Complete his/her PhD studies in instances where these have not yet been completed;
  • Assume limited administration responsibilities in his/her department.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Lecturer:

  • A Master's degree in the relevant discipline;
  • Illustrate the potential to become a competent lecturer;
  • Illustrate strong potential to become an established researcher.

 

Senior Lecturer

  • A relevant doctoral degree;
  • Substantial teaching experience;
  • Proven record of publications.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES)

  • Proven communications skills.

  • Experience in interdisciplinary, collaborative research;
  • Proven record of national and international teamwork;
  • Leadership potential.

 

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
