Topological concepts are reshaping our understanding of physics, allowing us to discover, study and classify new quantum states of matter. In solid-state materials, electronic energy bands can be labelled with topological integers, which, if non-zero, lead to striking phenomena such as quantized bulk transport and robust one-way propagating modes. Inspired by these effects, there has recently been great progress in engineering synthetic topological states with atomic and photonic systems, where topological ideas can shed light both on basic science and future technologies.

This PhD project will theoretically explore how new physical phenomena can be realised and observed by exploiting synthetic topological quantum matter. The project will include both analytical and numerical calculations, and the successful PhD candidate should have an Undergraduate or Masters degree in Physics (preferably with first class honours or equivalent). No background in topological physics is required, although the candidate is expected to have a strong general background in theoretical physics, with an interest in topics such as condensed matter physics, atomic physics and photonics.

The project will take places in Theoretical Physics at the School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Birmingham, under the supervision of Dr Hannah Price (https://hannahmprice.com/).

Funding Notes
