Assistant/Associate Professor; Horticulture
Weed Ecology and Management for Specialty Crop Systems

tenure-track
School of Integrative Plant Science—Horticulture Section
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences,
Cornell AgriTech, Geneva, NY

Academic year appointment: 9-month

Start Date: July 1, 2019 or as negotiated

The School of Integrative Plant Science at Cornell University (http://sips.cals.cornell.edu) invites applications for a tenure-track position in Weed Ecology and Management for Specialty Crop Systems. Preference will be given to applicants at the Assistant Professor level, but exceptional applicants at the Associate Professor level will also be considered. The successful applicant is expected to develop internationally recognized research and extension programs supported by external funding. Research should emphasize optimization of the entire production system that results in effective, resilient weed management, and may include applied agroecology, novel production-system enhancements enabled by computing and information science, nanotechnology, autonomous machines, organic agriculture and management of herbicide resistance. The successful candidate will lead an extension program in integrated weed management for specialty crops.

Responsibilities:
The position has 60% research and 40% extension responsibilities in whole-system solutions in specialty-crop production systems. The successful applicant is expected to develop internationally recognized research and extension programs supported by external funding. Research should emphasize design and management of the entire production system to realize effective, resilient weed management. Ideally the research program will have a foundation in applied agroecology and may include novel production-system enhancements enabled by digital agricultural technologies (sensors, data analytics, robotics), organic agriculture and effective use and management of herbicides. Extension responsibilities include leadership for systems-based horticultural crop management, maintaining integrated weed management guidelines in support of organic and conventional systems (including supporting registration of herbicides appropriate for horticultural crops in New York), and developing curricula for training extension educators and crop consultants. The extension program should be closely coordinated with other Cornell faculty, Cornell Cooperative Extension and New York growers.

Qualifications:

PhD degree in plant sciences or a related discipline with an emphasis on weed ecology and management. A record of peer-reviewed publications, grant support and scholarly accomplishments commensurate with experience. Preferred qualifications include postdoctoral experience, successful collaborative experience and ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups, including students, colleagues and external stakeholders. We seek applicants whose record in research, teaching or service has prepared them to contribute to Cornell's historical commitment to diversity.

Academic Rank, Compensation and Benefits:

Assistant/Associate Professor (tenure track) with salary competitive with peer institutions and commensurate with background and experience. An attractive fringe benefits package is provided.

Application Instructions:

Candidates should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, research and teaching statements, a statement of diversity, equity, and inclusion and arrange to have three reference letters submitted to Academic Jobs Online at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/12712 . Questions may be directed to Search Committee Chair Thomas Bjorkman (tnb1@cornell.edu) or to Ms. Amy Andersen (ada10@cornell.edu; 1-315-787-2394). Initial screening of applications will commence on December 3, 2018 and will continue until the position is filled.

Opportunity:

The new faculty member will join a collaborative, interdisciplinary community on the Geneva, New York campus of Cornell University. Cornell AgriTech is reimagining the future of food and agriculture systems through innovative research, technology, and education to improve the health of the people, environment and economy of New York State and beyond.

The Section of Horticulture is part of Cornell's School of Integrative Plant Science (SIPS), a large internationally renowned group of academics with abundant interactions and joint projects. Members of the section also have close collaborations with colleagues specializing in specialty crops on the Geneva campus, as well as professional staff in Cornell Cooperative Extension. The School of Integrative Plant Science (SIPS) was launched by Cornell's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in 2014 to provide a unifying framework for five sections (formerly departments) with interrelated activities: Horticulture, Plant Biology, Plant Breeding & Genetics, Plant Pathology & Plant-Microbe Biology, and Soil & Crop Sciences. The sections are associated with distinct disciplines and graduate fields, but are increasingly connected by urgent local and global challenges and the revolutionary scientific tools now available.

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University's second largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; food, energy and environmental resources; and social, physical and economic well-being.
