The Opportunity

The Department of Physics (www.physics.ryerson.ca) in the Faculty of Science at Ryerson University (www.ryerson.ca) is pleased to invite applications for two (2) full-time tenure-track positions at the Assistant Professor rank in the field of Physics of Complex Systems in areas such as, but not restricted to, Complex Networks and Computational Statistical Physics. These positions are an integral part of the Department's Strategic Plan, calling for the development of a new line of research on the Physics of Complex Systems, in addition to the current focus in Medical and Biomedical Physics. The expectation is to create a world-class research and graduate studies group that will parallel the exceptional level of excellence in our Department and be a source of renewed creativity in this exciting field of study. The appointment shall be effective July 1, 2019, subject to final budgetary approval.

The Department of Physics consists of 16 faculty members, 8 staff, 5 postdoctoral fellows and 51 graduate students. The Department offers undergraduate (B.Sc.) and graduate (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) programs. Our faculty prides itself on the quality, breadth and depth of its research. We are committed to excellence in teaching, including the application and research of Novel Physics Education techniques. As such, we are interested in candidates that will contribute to our existing research and teaching strengths by bringing innovative and diverse perspectives and experiences to the work.

 

Responsibilities

The successful candidates will engage in a combination of teaching, research and service duties. The candidates will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research programs that are externally funded and generate cutting-edge, high quality research in the field of Physics of Complex Systems.

The candidates will contribute to our undergraduate and graduate programs through teaching, mentoring and supervision of students. In particular, the candidates will be instrumental in the addition of the new field on the Physics of Complex Systems to the existing graduate program at Ryerson University. The candidates will engage in maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across all activities.

 

Qualifications

  • Candidates must hold an earned Ph.D. in Physics or a closely related field.
  • The successful candidate must present strong emerging scholarly research that is active, innovative and impactful resulting in achievements such as peer reviewed publications, book chapters, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades.
  • Potential for excellence in teaching must be provided through a teaching philosophy statement, teaching accomplishments, experience with course/curriculum review/development, excellent pedagogical practice, sample syllabi and teaching evaluations as appropriate. Evidence of strong communication skills and the potential to supervise undergraduate and graduate students are critical criteria for the successful candidate.
  • Strong endorsements/recommendations by referees of top international stature will be critical for these positions.
  • Candidates must have a demonstrated commitment to our values of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion as it pertains to service, teaching, and scholarly research or creative activities, including a demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population.
