Job Details

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Participating in teaching and learning of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students in Veterinary Microbiology/Parasitology;
  • Leading departmental research programmes;
  • Research and publications in peer-reviewed international journals;
  • Participating in departmental and faculty administrative and other duties as delegated by the Head of the Department;
  • Rendering community and other services to farmers, the veterinary profession; industry and other clients as required;
  • Participating in self-development activities as outlined by the Head of the Department;
  • Co-ordinating and supervising field-based projects.

 

Minimum Requirements:

Lecturer:

For candidate with a veterinary qualification:

  • A BVSc- or BVMCh-degree or an equivalent veterinary qualification;
  • A Master's or equivalent postgraduate degree at the time of appointment or registered  for an MSc to be completed within two years of appointment;
  • Registration (or registrable) as a Veterinarian with SAVC;
  • At least two years' experience in microbiology/parasitology;
  • Demonstrable interest in research;
  • Evidence of continued professional development or continued education development;
  • Participation in extracurricular academic activities or events;
  • Commitment to develop a teaching and learning portfolio required at the lecturer level;
  • Demonstrate strong potential to become an established specialist researcher.

 

For candidates without a veterinary qualification:

  • An appropriate Master's degree;
  • At least two years' experience in microbiology/parasitology;
  • Demonstrable interest in research;
  • Evidence of continued professional development or continued education development;
  • Participation in extracurricular academic activities or events;
  • Commitment to develop a teaching and learning portfolio required at the lecturer level;
  • Demonstrate strong potential to become an established specialist researcher.

 

Senior Lecturer:

For candidates with a veterinary qualification:

  • A BVSc- or BVMCh-degree or an equivalent veterinary qualification;
  • An appropriate Master's degree with demonstrable microbiology/parasitology expertise, and commitment to register for a PhD;
  • Registration (or registrable) as a Veterinarian with SAVC;
  • Evidence of teaching experience at a professional or tertiary level and appropriate clinical expertise that can be supported by relevant peer reviews;
  • At least two peer reviewed papers in an ISI accredited scientific journals as first or senior author during the last five years plus 3 - 5 subject or research publications;
  • Evidence in sourcing or obtaining research funds;
  • Evidence of successful post graduate supervision;
  • Evidence of community engagement;
  • Evidence of participation in relevant academic or professional organisations/bodies;
  • Evidence of administrative experience or participation in academic administrative activities;
  • Presentation at scientific and/or professional congresses at national and/or international level;
  • Commitment to develop a teaching and learning portfolio required at the Senior Lecturer level;
  • Demonstrate strong potential to become an established specialist researcher in an academic environment.

 

For candidates without a veterinary qualification:

  • An appropriate PhD (microbiology/parasitology) degree;
  • At least two years' teaching experience at tertiary level;
  • Commitment to develop a teaching and learning portfolio required at the Senior Lecturer level;
  • At least 3 - 5 publications in high impact journals over the past five years as first or senior author;
  • Evidence in sourcing or obtaining research funds;
  • Evidence of successful post graduate supervision;
  • Evidence of community engagement;
  • Evidence of participation in relevant academic or professional organisations/ bodies;
  • Evidence of administrative experience or participation in academic administrative activities;
  • Presentation at scientific and/or professional congresses at national and/or international level;
  • Demonstrate strong potential to become an established specialist researcher in an academic environment.

 

Associate Professor:

  • Doctoral degree (PhD) in microbiology/parasitology;
  • At least five to seven years' applicable experience at tertiary level;
  • For candidates with a veterinary degree: Registration (or registrable) as a Veterinarian with SAVC;
  • Teaching and learning portfolio required at the Associate Professor level;
  • National and international peer review recognition of teaching excellence;
  • At least 8-12 papers in high impact scientific journals with 50% as first or senior author and at least 50% published in the last five years;
  • National and with some international research standing confirmed by national and international peers reviews or having a current Y, C or higher NRF- rating;
  • Evidence of successful postgraduate supervision with 2 - 3 completed master or PhD students;
  • Evidence of research grant applications and in attracting research funding;
  • Evidence of community engagement;
  • Participation in relevant academic,  professional,  national organisations/bodies;
  • National and some international acknowledgement of academic standing and leadership in the relevant academic discipline;
  • Academic administrative experience and evidence of committee work in a department or section;
  • Membership of  international scientific bodies;
  • Conference papers delivered nationally and internationally;
  • Evidence of participation in extra-curricular faculty activities and events.

 

Full Professor:

  • Doctoral degree (PhD) in microbiology/parasitology;
  • Significant international professional recognition;
  • At least 8 - 10 years' experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate tertiary level;
  • For candidates with a veterinary degree: Registration (or registrable) as a Veterinarian with SAVC;
  • Experience in curriculum development and record of curriculum innovation;
  • Evidence leadership in teaching and learning within the Faculty;
  • Research excellence with evidence of experience in leading a research programme;
  • At least 10-17 publications in high impact scientific journals with 50% as first or senior author and at least 50% published in the last five years;
  • National and international research standing confirmed by national and international peers reviews or having a current C1 or higher NRF- rating;
  • Evidence of several completed Master's supervision and at least one completed Doctoral supervision;
  • Ability to attract own research funds;
  • Membership of international bodies;
  • Conference papers delivered internationally;
  • Evidence of community engagement;
  • Participation in relevant academic, professional  or policy/statutory organisations or bodies;
  • Acknowledgement of professional standing in relevant academic disciplines on national and international levels (for example invitations to present work/courses);
  • Evidence of disseminating research findings to public/industry at large e.g. through media and addressing issues in public meetings;
  • Evidence of established leadership in the department;
  • Evidence of committee work on departmental and faculty levels;
  • Participation in extracurricular faculty events/ activity.

 

Required Competencies (Skills, Knowledge and Behavioural Attributes):

  • Proven competence in basic microbiology/parasitology, research project design and data analysis;
  • Proven skills in disease investigation and health management interventions;
  • Research interest appropriate to the position;
  • Good language and communication skills (written and verbal comprehension and verbal expression);
  • Generic teaching competence such as communication and presentation, word-processing, spreadsheets and social networking skills.

 

Added Advantages and Prefences:

Lecturer:

For candidate with a veterinary qualification:

  • Evidence of applicable teaching experience;
  • At least one peer reviewed paper in an ISI accredited scientific journal.

 

For candidates without a veterinary qualification:

  • Evidence of applicable teaching experience;
  • At least two peer reviewed papers in an ISI accredited scientific journal.

 

For all levels:

  • Experience in vector-borne and zoonotic diseases.

 

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
