Job Purpose

The College of Engineering and Physical Sciences comprises seven Schools: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Metallurgy and Materials.

We are currently advertising for three positions: one for the School of Chemistry and two for the School of Metallurgy and Materials. These posts will provide future leadership for the College and wider University, maximising the impact of innovative education methods that will be pioneered at CTL and enhancing the delivery of research-led teaching via a variety of blended learning methods via cutting-edge educational technology (EdTech).

The post-holders will support the individual Schools and the Collaborative Teaching Laboratory (CTL) to design, develop and deliver undergraduate, postgraduate and CPD programmes as required contribute to the leadership, management, enterprise and outreach activities of the Schools and the CTL develop innovative teaching methods, including the use of EdTech for programme delivery and assessment share best practice across the College and wider University. develop effective methods for evaluating the success of teaching innovations speak about their education research, and publish their work to establish a national profile

The three positions are focused on the following CTL activities: chemistry wet laboratories (School of Chemistry) collaborative projects for STEM undergraduates, including industrial liaison (School of Metallurgy and Materials) digital technologies and blended learning for STEM (School of Metallurgy and Materials)

The post-holders will be based in the respective Schools and spend part of their time in the CTL as appropriate, working closely with the CTL Academic Director.

It is expected that the post-holders will have a long-term career progression that will involve leadership of initiatives to improve STEM education at University and national level leading publications and making presentations at conferences to display UoB as a leader ininterdisciplinary work for undergraduates. coaching/mentoring academic staff at the University and for local schools, including provision of bespoke materials seeking funding for major initiatives

Postholders will contribute to the whole range of teaching and administration. Teaching is likely to include a substantial contribution to: (a) the management, design, development (including programme/module review) and delivery of teaching and assessment at all levels; and (b) enhancement of the student experience and/or employability.

The role will involve developing and advising others, including: (a) providing expert advice to staff (including academic, academic-related and support) and students, and (b) developing and advising others on learning and teaching tasks and methods.

The post holder should advance the practice of teaching in their modules within their School, take a role in leading curriculum development, and play an important role in student academic support. They should also deliver excellent teaching that inspires students, and is informed by discipline-based research.

Management and administration will involve contributions at both School and CTL level. This may include developing and making substantial contributions to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, public engagement, widening participation, schools outreach, undergraduate admissions and similar activities at School level or further within the University.

 

Person Specification

  • A higher degree (usually PhD or equivalent) relevant to the discipline area, e.g. Chemistry, Engineering, Materials Science.
  • Extensive research/teaching experience and scholarship within subject specialism.
  • A proven track record in developing and leading interdisciplinary project work for undergraduates.
  • Proven ability to devise, advise on and manage learning.
  • Demonstrable skills in managing, motivating & mentoring others successfully at all levels.
  • Ability to innovate in an evidenced-based manner Documented project-management skills Ability to design, deliver, assess and revise teaching programmes.
  • Extensive experience and demonstrated success in developing appropriate approaches to learning and teaching and advising colleagues
  • A proven track record in innovating, developing and delivering at scale EdTech for STEM disciplines, using both commercially available software and design from scratch as required; able to deliver training in this area to both students and staff.
  • Experience and achievement in knowledge transfer, enterprise and similar activity that enhances the student experience and/or employability
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to School and College management processes
  • Demonstrated ability to assess and organise resources effectively Demonstrated understanding of - and ability to contribute to - broader management/administration processes.
