Job Purpose

This post will be part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

The Centre for Innovation in Advanced Measurement in Manufacturing (CIAMM) is a 3 year project part funded by ERDF and its partner, the National Physical Laboratory (NPL). CIAMM will create an internationally significant Quantum Technology Innovation Hub to support sensor technologists, systems engineers & SME businesses to develop new businesses, products & services which are built on commercial applications of quantum technology and advanced metrology.

There is a need for highly qualified Knowledge Exchange Fellows at the University to support SMEs in Research and Development in innovative scientific instruments which are built on quantum technologies, focussing initially on medical imaging; nuclear medicine; civil & mechanical engineering; and satellite technology applications.

The post will be based in the School of Physics and Astronomy at Birmingham although the post holder will be expected to work on various locations from time to time. The role will also involve extensive collaboration with GBS LEP area SMEs. Therefore, the ability to interact with external commercial organizations is a prerequisite for this position.

 

Person Specification

  • Hold a relevant first degree or masters in related disciplines or equivalent experience
  • Hold a PhD or EngD in physics or related disciplines
  • Postgraduate practitioner experience in innovation, metrology and space chemistry of materials and their reactions with other components
  • Experience on test and validation reporting
  • Experience of working with or within industry
  • Experience in outreach activities
  • Experience of supervision and management of research students and projects
  • Strong data and analysis skills
  • Demonstrable outreach, business and public engagement skills
  • Substantial experience in systems engineering
  • Possesses sufficient breadth and depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline and or research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes Relevant and up to date knowledge in an area of optics, photonics, laser physics, atomic physics, precision measurement, electronics,or related field
  • Skilled in the use of standard Office IT and statistical analysis
  • Ability to summarise complex issues/concepts and present them appropriately for a range of audiences
  • Ability to plan, manage and prioritize own workload, respond to changing priorities and deliver innovative solutions to deadlines maintaining a consistently high standard of service and meeting client needs
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-functional team across partner organizations
  • Good client relationship management and interpersonal skills and an ability to work closely with other people at all levels of seniority, both within and outside the University
  • Good communication skills: oral, written and presentational
  • Understanding of academic research and knowledge transfer practices, funding streams and motivations
