The University of Queensland Diamantina Institute

The University of Queensland Diamantina Institute was established in 2007 as the sixth research institute of The University of Queensland. The aim of the Institute is to develop a better understanding of the molecular and cellular basis of disease, and to translate that understanding into practical outcomes for patients. Based at the Translational Research Institute (TRI) at the Princess Alexandra Hospital teaching campus in Brisbane, the Institute has more than 300 researchers and students who work closely with clinicians in the areas of cancer, immunology and genomic medicine.

The role

There is a well-known observational relationship between adverse intrauterine environments and the development of disease in later life. This complex relationship and the reasons for it, have become known as the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD). The primary purpose of the position will be to apply advanced statistical genetic techniques to investigate the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease in large-scale datasets including the UK Biobank Study and cohort studies within the Early Growth Genetics Consortium. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to assist in the development and application of new statistical genetics methods based on Mendelian randomization and structural equation modelling that are being created within the Evans group. The appointee will take responsibility for the analysis and write up of these studies, and will be expected to assist in helping run large international collaborations.

The person

Applicants should possess a PhD in statistics, genetics, epidemiology or a related field (or be near finishing such a degree). They should have expertise in genome-wide association studies and Mendelian randomization. Experience in the UNIX environment and one of the major statistics packages (e.g. R) will be necessary and applicants with programming skills and expertise in structural equation modelling will be highly sought after.
