Job Details
Fixed term position for three years.
The University of Adelaide is part of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery (OzGrav).
The successful candidate will assemble and install state-of-the-art wavefront sensors and active wavefront control systems in advanced-generation gravitational wave detectors, and assist with commissioning of the LIGO Hanford and Livingston Observatories. This new instrumentation is based on our world-leading research in collaboration with the LIGO Laboratory and builds upon our demonstrated expertise in high sensitivity wavefront sensing and numerical simulation of detectors.
To be successful you will need:
- PhD or equivalent degree (or thesis submitted) in development of optical lock-in amplifiers and active optics for advanced-generation gravitational wave detectors and a commitment to research excellence
- Experience in the use of Hartmann wavefront sensors for high-precision measurement of optics and profiling of laser beams
- Experience with COMSOL and FINESSE numerical modelling packages, proficiency in coding using Python software
- Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research in addition to working effectively as a member of a research team in a complex setting
- A commitment to travel to the LIGO observatories, LHO and/or LLO, for extended periods of time to participate in installation of instrumentation in the Advanced LIGO detectors and commissioning of those detectors
