Fixed term for two (2) years with a possibility of extension subject to funding availability and performance.
The Special Research Centre for the Subatomic Structure of Matter (CSSM) at the University of Adelaide invites applications for a postdoctoral position in lattice gauge theory, starting in Fall 2019. The initial appointment will be for two years with the possibility of further extension subject to available funding and performance. The position is funded through Discovery Project (DP190100297), "Supercomputing the tomography of the proton", awarded from the Australian Research Council and will focus on revealing the quark and gluon distributions of the proton.
The lattice group at the CSSM consists of three staff members (Prof Derek Leinweber, A/Prof Ross Young, A/Prof James Zanotti), and benefits from interaction with the wider nuclear and particle physics staff (Dr Rodney Crewther, A/Prof Paul Jackson, Prof Anthony Thomas, A/Prof Martin White, Prof Anthony Williams). A dynamic environment is created through interaction with numerous postdocs and a large cohort of PhD students. Current research topics in the lattice group include hadron structure and spectroscopy, QED corrections to hadronic observables and vacuum structure. The group has access to significant computing resources on the local Phoenix supercomputer, on the national facility at NCI, and on international resources made available through the QCDSF collaboration.
To be successful you will need:
- A PhD or equivalent degree (or thesis submitted) in lattice gauge theory or a closely related field
- Experience in theoretical nuclear or particle physics and a commitment to research excellence
- Programming experience in Fortran, C++, Python or other relevant language
- Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research in addition to working effectively as a member of a research team in a complex setting
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, excellent organisational and time management skills
