Curator, UQ Art Museum

A key aim of the UQ Art Museum is to foster critical enquiry, enjoyment and appreciation of art and visual culture.

2019-2024 at the UQ Art Museum aims to significantly build on its identity as a place for progressive and contemporary creative inquiry. Launching in mid-2019 a progressive new research arc for the museum places learning at the core of our activities, with a program that engages with new knowledges and interpretations; interrogates and critiques worldviews; examines states of being in the present, with particular attention to our divergent histories and futures that question moral, ethical and aesthetic frameworks. We will take experimental, sometimes radical, approaches to subject matter and materials, forms, space, time, and audiences.

The University of Queensland Art Museum (UQ Art Museum) is located in the James and Mary Emelia Mayne Centre on The University of Queensland's St Lucia campus, and is recognised as one of the nation's most significant university art museums. Through an active range of exhibitions, public programs and publications, the Art Museum seeks to engage with the University and broader community, and welcomes a diverse audience. We aim to stimulate debate and dialogue across all UQ disciplines, to encourage participation by diverse audiences, and to enhance the campus experience of UQ students. We are committed to providing UQ students with professional skills and practical training in art museum management. 

The role

Are you highly collaborative? Do you embrace alternative modes of exhibition-making? Do you have proven skills in the delivery of dynamic exhibitions in a timely manner?

We are looking for a dynamic and collaborative Curator to join our creative team at UQ Art Museum. The position lies within the UQ Art Museum's primary creative team of curators, educators and designers. Collaboratively, this team researches, conceives and produces the Art Museum's exhibitions, public art projects, education and other programs with an aim to extend the role of the Art Museum and its collection within the larger university environment.

Reporting to the Senior Curator, the Curator is expected to possess a high-level knowledge of the discourses, histories, theories, material construction and condition of works relevant to the UQ Art Museum's emphases and programs. The Curator's role is to provide direction in conceiving innovative exhibitionary forms that provoke conversation, coupled with a deep understanding of the practicalities behind exhibition development, budgeting and implementation. The Curator is also a key member of The University's Art Acquisition Committee. Additionally, the Curator will possess an enthusiasm for mentorship and will manage the UQ Art Museum's curatorial student employment, internship, bursary and work experience program. As part of the UQ Art Museum team the Curator is expected to share ideas and propose and implement new work practices.

The person

Applicants should possess a degree in a relevant discipline or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training. Proven curatorial programming and art collection research and management is essential. Previous experience in a similar role within a university and/or knowledge of public art commissioning will be highly regarded.

Remuneration

This is a full-time, continuing appointment at HEW Level 6. The remuneration package will be in the range $75,957.07 - $81,714.50 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $88,869.77 - $95,605.96 p.a.).
