Terrestrial Ecosystem Ecologist

Location: Oak Ridge, TN, USA, 37831

Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Purpose

The Ecosystem Science Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking an early- to mid-career ecosystem ecologist with a passion for studying the natural world. You will be joining a highly-motivated team that seeks quantitative and mechanistic understanding of ecosystem responses to environmental change through a process of observation-model-experiment that values open (sharing of data, code, and resources) and outward-looking research. The ideal candidate will have expertise in studying terrestrial ecosystems in the field, and experience in remote sensing (e.g. LIDAR/SIF), plant-soil nutrient interactions, or ecosystem manipulations.

This will be a full-time research staff position with significant potential for scientific growth and career advancement for a creative and highly motivated individual.

Over its 60 years, the Environmental Sciences Division of ORNL has been synonymous with world-leading, cutting-edge ecological research. The Ecosystem Science Group is world-renowned for large-scale experimental manipulations and is currently leading the US DOE flagship ‘Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments’ (SPRUCE) field experiment https://mnspruce.ornl.gov/. ESD staff also lead the Next Generation Ecosystem Experiment (NGEE) Arctic https://ngee-arctic.ornl.gov/ project, and we are an integral partner in the NGEE Tropics research program https://ngee-tropics.lbl.gov/.

As a new member of our group you will have the opportunity to work on these projects, to lead independent research within strongly collaborative interdisciplinary teams, to collaborate with a number of world-class partner research groups, to help shape the future research directions of the group, to develop next-generation large-scale ecological studies in important Earth biomes, and to participate in developing and proposing new research programs to a variety of sponsors.

Questions regarding the position can be directed to Paul J. Hanson, hansonpj@ornl.gov
