Job Details

The University of Bristol seeks to appoint an outstanding academic leader as the Dean of its Faculty of Social Sciences and Law.

The Faculty is a vibrant community of world-class expertise in accounting and finance, education, economics, human geography, international studies, law, management, politics, social policy, social work and sociology, attracting talented staff and students from around the world.  Many programmes are ranked in the top 100 in both the Times Higher World University Rankings 2019 and the 2018 QS World University Rankings.  With over 4,300 undergraduate and almost 3,500 postgraduate students, the Faculty has over 600 academic and professional services staff and a current annual income of over £100m.

The Dean will provide inspirational leadership to the Faculty and its staff, students and partners, enabling the Faculty to develop further its excellent education and research.

The appointee will have a strategic vision for the diversity of disciplines across the Faculty, as well as for the Faculty's role within the University, the city region, the UK and internationally.  The Dean will also have a deep commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, and understand and be ready to champion the benefits of diversifying the current and future pipeline of talent across the Faculty.  She or he will have a track record of excellent partnership working - both internally, with academic and professional services staff, and externally - and will be able to lead on and drive forward change within the Faculty and the wider University.

The appointment as Dean will be for five years, subject to renewal for a further one year, and will go hand in hand with an open-ended full-time professorial position.

This is an exceptional opportunity to shape the future of Social Sciences and Law at a pioneering, Russell Group University in a creative, culturally vibrant city that was named the best city to live in by The Sunday Times in its ‘Best Places to Live Guide 2017'.
