Job Details

The Immunology and Physiology Laboratory / São Leopoldo Mandic College, through the Thematic Project funded by the Sao Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), entitled “Use of drug delivery systems for the development and application of anti-inflammatory agents with potential immunomodulatory and neuroprotective effects,” offers a Post-doctoral position for foreigner or Brazilian candidates, with PhD degree obtained for a maximum of 7 (seven) years. This fellowship is intended to carry out the workplan titled: "The use of micro-needles coated with drugs for the control of pain and inflammation".

Microneedles are presented as promising therapeutic proposals for the release of drugs in the control of inflammatory pain. Developed by Dr. Harvinder Singh Gill, Micro-Nano Medicine Immunology Laboratory of the Texas Institute of Technology, Texas Tech University (Lubbock, USA), the microneedle coating patch contains 57 microneedles (700 μm) that can break through the stratum corneum thus enabling the transport of poteins and nanoparticles, in a minimally invasive, safe, and painless way.

To demonstrate that the use of drug-coated microneedles has a real clinical applicability in the control of inflammation and pain, in this project we are proposing a longitudinal clinical study where patients with TMD signs and symptoms classified in group III of the Research Diagnostic Criteria / Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC / TMD) -- which includes situations of arthralgia, arthritis and arthrosis -- will be treated with microneedles coated with tramadol. The development of this study aims to demonstrate the applicability of microneedles for topical application of drugs envisaging a new clinical strategy for the control of inflammatory pain in joints. In addition, the characterization of microneedles coated with the metabolic inhibitor of soluble epoxy hydrolase (TPPU) (1-trifluoromethoxyphenyl-3- (1-propionylpiperidin-4-yl)) will be performed. TPPU causes the sEH levels in the tissues to remain elevated for a long time by mediating important resolving actions of the inflammatory cascade. For this stage the efficiency of in vitro TPPU release and tests of effectiveness and longevity of the peripheral anti-inflammatory effect of TPPU in vivo will be evaluated.
