Position Summary

The Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University (LKSOM), a nationally renowned, top-tier medical institution invites applications and candidate nominations for the role of Chair, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

The new Chair is a dynamic, creative, and innovative individual who possesses prior leadership and program development experience in an academic environment.  The Chair will lead, manage and develop the department to ensure it achieves the highest possible standards of excellence in all its activities.  Specifically, the incumbent will continue to develop the clinical enterprise, pursue new business opportunities and partnerships, recruit and retain faculty/staff, heighten scholarly activity and enhance medical education.   It is expected that the successful candidate will be highly knowledgeable on external trends, opportunities and have the ability to develop a strategic plan that maximizes performance in all phases of the mission.  The Chair will have the proven ability to communicate and collaborate with key clinical and administrative leaders to ensure that the strategies and activities of the Department are aligned with the mission and goals of the organization and the needs of its faculty and staff.  Lastly, it strongly preferred that the successful candidate will have proven leadership in areas contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as a commitment to advancing these principles within the Department and the School.

Currently, the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation consists of 4 full time clinical faculty members who provide evaluation and comprehensive treatment for patients with physical impairments such as burns, nerve and musculoskeletal disorders.  The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is also a major education center for medical students, residents, fellows, and students in the professional disciplines. The Department currently includes a robust PM&R residency program with 27 residents.  Resident education is obtained through rotations at Temple University Hospital (TUH) and MossRehab.

Successful candidates will possess an M.D. or D.O. with active certification by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is required and credentials that will support a faculty appointment at the rank of Associate Professor/Professor are strongly preferred.  Candidates with additional pertinent degrees (Ph.D., M.B.A., and M.P.H.) and fellowship training are encouraged to apply.  Spine focus/experience preferred.  Candidates will have excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong interpersonal, organizational and problem-solving skills and strong commitment to diversity and inclusivity. Lastly, candidates should be active participants in specialty organizations/committees at the regional and national levels and have the ability to obtain medical licensure in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Candidate Minimum Qualifications        

 

  • An M.D. or D.O. with active board certification by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
  • Credentials for a faculty appointment at the level of Associate Professor/Professor are preferred.
  • Strong ability to work collaboratively with leaders of various entities in the advancement of medical education at the undergraduate medical level as well as GME and CME.
  • Personal record of distinguished scholarly, educational, research (basic and/or translational), and/or clinical accomplishments in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation or related field.
  • Competency navigating the interaction of the educational, research and service missions of a complex academic medical center.
  • Ability to understand and uphold the highest degree of ethical standards and maintain the integrity of the organization.
  • Strong personal and professional commitment to building and maintaining a diverse and inclusive workforce and a demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals with diverse backgrounds and groups representing numerous societal interests and needs.
  • Demonstrated record of program development, collaboration, community engagement, clinical care, education, and leadership.
  • Skilled at recruiting and retention, and values the role of leaders in mentoring.
  • Excellent verbal, written and group presentation skills.
  • Proven ability to develop and execute short and long-term strategic initiatives.
  • In possession of/eligible for an unrestricted medical license in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is designated as an academic department of the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University and a clinical unit of Temple University Hospital. In addition to 16 DRG-exempt acute level rehabilitation beds at Temple University and Jeanes Hospitals, we have an active inpatient consultation service, extensive resources for outpatients, and facilities for electrodiagnostic testing and injection procedures.  Each member of our staff feels a great responsibility toward our patients and strives to make their time with us a positive experience. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program

The Temple University Hospital/Moss Rehab Resident Training Program in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is a three-year program designed to equal or exceed the basic requirements for training in the specialty of Physiatry as established by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education. Full-time and volunteer members of Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University faculty contribute their knowledge and experience in patient care, teaching, and research.
