Job summary

The post is funded for 1 year to provide support for Dr Paul Foster's research group which are investigating the importance of oestrogen metabolism in colorectal cancer. This project will particularly focus on the effects of 17beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase enzymes in colorectal cancer proliferation and whether inhibiting these enzymes using both pharmacological intervention and siRNA blocks growth. The research technician will work closely with Dr Foster and his research team to provide publication quality data in a timely manner. Results will form the basis for further proposals on targeting 17beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase enzymes in other cancers and oestrogen-dependent diseases. The research technician will be expected to have significant experience in cell culture techniques, western blotting, qRT-PCR, and cell proliferation assays. Furthermore, the post holder should have excellent presentation skills and a demonstrable willingness to work closely with other researchers.

Person Specification

  • Extensive relevant experience, professional qualification or degree in an appropriate subject GCSE (A*- C) or equivalent in mathematics
  • In-depth proven practical knowledge of technical and scientific methods stated within job description such as:
    • Tissue culture methods to include
      • Culture of primary and immortalised cell lines
      • Proliferation assays
    • Mass spectrophotometry to include sample extraction Basic molecular biology techniques to include
      • Western blotting
      • RNA extraction
      • qRT-PCR
      • siRNA
  • Good Laboratory Practice gained through extensive experience and formal qualification
  • Extensive experience of similar laboratory based work
  • Knowledge of Animals Scientific Procedures Act (1986)
  • Positive service attitude and shows courtesy in dealing with others
  • Ability to organise and manage own work load and demonstrate flexibility in terms of work practices/requirements
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision but function as part of a team
  • Knowledge of current relevant H&S policies
  • Proficiency in commonly used software packages
  • Willingness to work towards professional registration
