ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR - DAIRY/LIVESTOCK GENOMICS SPECIALIST

Position Description

The Animal Sciences Department in the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track, academic year (9-month) position. Starting date is negotiable, but on or before September 12, 2019, is preferred. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in dairy genetics/genomics and general domesticated animal genomics, as well as other topics related to the individual's expertise and the department's needs.

The successful candidate may contribute to the selection strategies for department dairy and other livestock herds. Duties may also include, but are not limited to, supervision of undergraduate senior projects, graduate student research and student advising. The successful candidate is expected to participate in scholarly activities (i.e., research, publications, presentations) as part of his/her professional development. Service activities will include participation on department, college, and university committees and instructionally-related activities.

Qualifications:

A doctorate in Animal Science, Dairy Science or a closely related field is required. Practical experience in utilizing genomic resources in dairy and/or beef cattle selection systems is essential. A background with emphasis in genomics applied to genetic improvement of livestock and expertise in bioinformatic and computational genomic applications is preferred.

The successful candidate must demonstrate excellence in teaching, effective communication, and interpersonal skills. The ability to work independently and to be a well-organized and productive team player who interacts well with peers, students, farm personnel, industry representatives, regulatory agencies, and the general public is essential. Candidates must demonstrate a positive commitment to diversity.

Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong interests in undergraduate and graduate teaching are required. Particular attention will be afforded to candidates who have productive records of teaching, scholarly activity and student-involved research that would strengthen current department activities.
