RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbents will be responsible for:

  • Cleaning of animal quarters, clinic, laboratory area, consulting and procedure rooms;
  • Feeding and handling small animals, including aggressive animals;
  • Offering assistance during procedures;
  • Treatment of ecto- and endoparasites;
  • Picking up and carrying heavy animals; 
  • Being flexible to assist in all Small Animal Sections in the OVAH;
  • Performing shift/weekend duties.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Grade 12 and six months' experience in handling of dogs and cats at a veterinary practice or hospital.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Knowledge of small animals;
  • The ability to handle aggressive animals;
  • Strong service orientation and co-ordination ability;
  • Physically able to pick up and carry heavy animals;
  • Some knowledge of detergents and disinfectants and cleaning equipment;
  • Punctuality;
  • Appropriate language and communication skills and ability;
  • Personal neatness;
  • Initiative;
  • Attention and empathy for pets and their needs;
  • Willingness to perform shift duties, cleaning duties and weekend duties.

 

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
