The University's Facility Services Department strives to excel in its service delivery and uphold its sustainable credentials and status as an award-winning team. Cleaning Services forms part of the Facility Services Department within Hospitality and Accommodation Services (HAS) at the University of Birmingham.The HAS directorate encompasses a diverse range of services which are pivotal to the smooth running of the university and its business sustainability.

The Deputy Manager for Cleaning Services will have overall responsibility for the daily management and delivery of a high quality professional cleaning service across the breadth of the university campus. With a commitment to providing a first class experience to the students and staff at the university, this post will form an integral part of the facilities management team. The post-holder will be expected to proactively review and streamline services to ensure they are efficient, effective and economical, whilst maintaining continuity in service delivery and meeting agreed SLAs.

The post holder will have up-to-date knowledge of the cleaning industry and will be able to plan, cost and implement new and efficient ways of working. They will be responsible for managing, motivating and supporting a substantial team delivering a service operating almost 24 hours, 7 days per week. The post holder will be required to deputise for the Operations Manager as required.

Person Specification

  • Significant experience of delivering exceptional customer service through a team of managers and/or team leaders. Experience of managing a substantial operationally focussed team.
  • Experience of managing a cleaning services team in a large and complex organisation would be an advantage.
  • Experience in investigating and resolving issues creatively, dealing with complaints and ensuring an effective resolution.
  • A relevant management / supervisory qualification is highly desirable, alongside significant experience of managing a team of operational staff.
  • Knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work Act, COSHH and other regulatory guidance (e.g. British Institute of Cleaning Science).
  • Membership of a professional association such as the British Institute of Cleaning Science is desirable.
  • Ability to work on own initiative under limited supervision, with a proactive approach to problem solving.
  • Good interpersonal skills are essential, with the ability to communicate in a friendly and courteous manner with colleagues, internal and external customers.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability and flexibility to work under pressure to conflicting deadlines, reprioritising workload where necessary.
  • Good working knowledge and practical competency of IT operating systems, e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint
