Job Details

Duties and responsibilities:
  • Receive sample(s), assist clients to complete submission forms and inform clients of procedures and policy of the laboratory.
  • Distribute copies of submission forms to the relevant laboratories.
  • Handle samples and perform analyses according to SOPs and test methods.
  • Maintain and manage client samples in compliance with privacy and security regulations.
  • Answer and manage incoming calls (screening and directing calls, if necessary) and respond to and comply with requests for client and sample information.
  • Despatch laboratory work appropriately.
  • Maintain a professional reception area.
  • Assist with the preparing of samples according the SOP's for some chemical and bacteriology analysis as well as some of the administrative duties.
  • Analyse samples according to the SOP's.
  • Capture client data on the prescribed documents.
  • Write notification of AQC (Analytical Quality Control) failure reports (non-­ conformances).
  • Maintain all equipment for preparing and analysing samples and keep record of all related activities.
  • Provide training to new staff members in the laboratory environment.
  • Perform any other duties deemed necessary by the laboratory manager or any other senior staff members.
  • Prepare media and reagents used for the above analyses.
  • Test, check and record the suitability of reagents (standards, buffers), where necessary.
  • Interpret data and handle the validation of calibration and sample-results.
  • Assess own data to ensure accuracy and validity of reported results.
  • Capture data correctly into relevant spreadsheet.
  • Calibrate equipment where applicable.
  • Prepare and set up water samples for the following microbial and chemical analyses (in accordance with SOPs and H&S) and use the relevant equipment for these analyses in a proper manner:
    • pH, EC, Alkalinity, Turbidity, Sugar (manual test), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Free Chlorine, Suspended Solids (SS), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Colour, Mercury (Hg), Total/Dissolved Organic Carbon (TOG/DOC), Heterotrophic Plate Count (HPC), Total/Faecal Coliforms, E.coli

 

Inherent requirements:

  • BSc degree
  • One (1) to two (2) years' relevant experience

 

Required competencies:

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to function with ease in the University's richly diverse working environment.
  • Flexible attitude and willingness to work outside normal office hours.
  • Knowledge of operating an ICP.
  • Knowledge of the ISO 17025 standard
  • Results Orientated.

 

Recommendations:

  • Geohydrology and chemistry background.
  • Background in geohydrology and inorganic chemical laboratory work

As soon as possible.
