Job Purpose

To assist in molecular biology research in a genomics laboratory, by preparing experimental samples for transcriptome and metabolome (multi-omics) analysis. The candidate is expected to have experience with DNA, RNA and metabolite preparation for mass spectrometry and DNA sequencing (including ATAC). These activities aim to complete data collection for a NERC funded project “Cracking the Code of Adaptive Evolution” (deCODE). The post holder will provide support for and contribute to College activities under the direction of the local Research Lab Manager as required.

The candidate will contribute to complete ongoing research for a NERC funded project “Cracking the Code of Adaptive Evolution” (deCODE) by (1) extracting RNA, DNA and metabolites for metabolomics, transcriptomics and ATAC sequencing using NGS platforms; (2) contribute to constructing NGS libraries; (3) assist in NGS data demultiplexing and distribution. The ideal candidate will: (i) have experience in NGS sample preparations; (ii) have proven experience in DNA/RNA and eDNA techniques; (iii) have experience in molecular biology techniques, such as qPCR, PCR and gel imaging; (iv) have prior experience in working with the model system Daphnia.

Main Duties

  • To generate multi-omics data.
  • Extracting RNA, DNA and metabolites for metabolomics, transcriptomics and ATAC sequencing using NGS platforms.
  • Contribute to constructing NGS libraries.
  • Assist in NGS data demultiplexing and distribution.
  • Contribute where applicable to the day to day operations and functions of the lab.
  • Deal with technical problems that may affect the timely delivery of samples.
  • Optimize/modify existing protocols adapted for the non-model species Daphnia.
  • Provide guidance, as required, to students who may be assisting with the research.

 

Person Specification

  • Masters degree in area of specialism or between 1 and 2 year experience in an NGS laboratory.
  • Extensive relevant experience, degree or equivalent professional qualification in an appropriate subject. GCSE (A*- C) or equivalent in mathematics In-depth practical knowledge of technical and scientific methods stated above and Good Laboratory Practice gained through extensive experience and formal qualification
  • Extensive experience of similar laboratory based work
  • Positive service attitude and shows courtesy in dealing with others
  • Ability to organise and manage own work load and demonstrate flexibility in terms of work practices/requirements
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision but function as part of a team
  • Knowledge of current relevant H&S policies Proficiency in commonly used software packages Willingness to work towards professional registration
