Non-Linear Vibro-Acoustic Meta-Materials and the University of Adelaide PhD Scholarship Scheme - 2 Scholarships available

Two top-up scholarships valued at $15,000 per annum, for 3 years, are currently available as support while undertaking a research project jointly based in the School of Mechanical Engineering and the School of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Adelaide.

Available to domestic applicants who apply for and receive an Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship on the advertised project, the top-up scholarship will be awarded in addition to the RTP stipend scholarship.

Based within the School of Mechanical Engineering our Acoustics Vibration and Control researchers undertake fundamental and applied research to solve significant industry challenges, and consistently deliver tangible, real-world impact.

A couple of recent examples include the use of our innovative:
  • commercial active noise and vibration controllers
  • acoustic and vibration technologies.

The research focus for these 2 PhD projects is on acoustic meta-materials, and, in particular, exploiting non-linear material behaviours to enhance or customise acoustic absorption properties.

The exact details of the project will be negotiated with the candidate prior to submission of an application for an Australian Postgraduate Award. Suggested topics to be investigated include:
  • Highly absorptive acoustic meta-materials for use in air or underwater.
  • Non-linear vibration isolation materials.
  • Non-linear acoustic materials.
  • Adaptive-passive acoustic absorptive material that can be dynamically adjusted.

It is expected the research will involve numerical and theoretical analyses to design a non-linear material that will be fabricated and experimentally tested.

To be eligible you will need to:
  • Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or an Australian Permanent Resident
  • Be studying full-time and onshore in Australia
  • Be assessed by the Adelaide Graduate Centre as meeting all conditions for admission to the Doctoral program
  • Be living in, or able to relocate to, South Australia for the duration of the Scholarship
  • Not hold a qualification at the same or at a higher level than the research higher degree program you are undertaking
  • Not be receiving a living allowance award, scholarship or salary providing a benefit greater than 75% of the RTP scholarship living allowance rate to undertake the research higher degree program.
