Job summary

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have an established background in crystallization? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK's leading research intensive universities?

We are looking for an outstanding Research Fellow to join our collaborative project between Professor Fiona Meldrum in the School of Chemistry and Professor Hugo Christenson in the School of Physics and Astronomy. The project will exploit surface topography to direct crystallization processes with outstanding spatial and temporal resolution, and the position will be funded by an EPSRC Platform Grant. It is anticipated that the post-holder will initially be based in Physics and move to Chemistry for the last six months of the contract.Understanding the mechanisms which govern crystallization promises the ability to inhibit or promote crystallization as desired, and to tailor the properties of crystalline materials towards a huge range of applications. This project will focus on the use of surface topography to control crystallization and will aim to build a new understanding of the interplay between chemical and topographical influences on heterogeneous nucleation. You will fabricate and characterise substrates with topographical features, and will use these to direct the nucleation of inorganic and organic substances, including water/ice, of great applied importance. You will also use a wide range of analytical techniques including Raman microscopy, X-Ray diffraction and electron microscopy to characterise nucleation and growth on these substrates. You will have a PhD in Physical Sciences or a closely related field, and you will have a background in the experimental study of nucleation and crystallization.
