Job purpose

The Department of Classics, Ancient History and Archaeology is looking to appoint a teaching fellow (full-time) to teach modules in classical Latin language and literature to replace a colleague on a secondment. The position is a fixed-term appointment for three years from 1 September 2019.

Duties

To teach and advise undergraduate, postgraduate or CPD students within own subject area and within an established teaching programme, managed supervised by member of staff with ultimate responsibility for the design, delivery and assessment of the teaching programme.

Teaching courses at a range of levels within specified subject area and within own area of subject specialism to undergraduates, postgraduates and CPD students predominantly through allocated lectures and seminars, so that the School's teaching objectives are met. These modules will include a Latin 'Project' module, contributions to 'Introduction to Roman Literature', 'Age of Cicero', 'Roman Love Elegy', and, ideally, 'Love in Greek Literature'. Contributions to other modules at all levels are likely.

Contributing to the design of modules with other colleagues, to plan and prepare own teaching, including guidance notes and handouts in accordance with the established objectives of the teaching programme, to devise and supervise projects, student dissertations and practical work.

Planning and reviewing own teaching.

Undertaking the full range of responsibilities in relation to supervision, marking and examining.(Summative assessment, including assessed work contributing to the final award - as a mark or as a credit - such as unseen examinations, essays, dissertations or presentations, is subject to validation by the academic supervisor.)

They will also be required to update their own subject expertise, undertake personal professional development in teaching, including self-reflection on own teaching, using student and peer review feedback, to enhance own teaching and learning processes, and contribute to knowledge transfer on own specialism that is of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader.

In addition they will be required to undertake management/administration arising from teaching and to contribute to Departmental/School teaching-related activities and teaching-related administration.

Person Specification

The successful candidate will have:
  • a PhD in classics/ancient history or be near completion of a PhD;
  • the expertise to teach in the area specified in the job particulars and in particular all levels of Latin;
  • experience of teaching in a university department or equivalent;
  • fluent written and spoken English.
  • Ability to also teach Ancient Greek language would be an advantage.

Higher degree relevant to research or teaching area or equivalent qualifications
  • High level analytical capability
  • Ability to design and deliver module materials successfully
  • Ability to assess and organise resources effectively
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
  • Ability to teach Latin Language to all UG and PG levels
  • Experience in teaching Latin Language modules
  • Ability to teach Latin Literature modules to all levels (particularly the modules listed in the 'Main Responsibilities' box above.)
  • Ideally ability to teach Greek Literature modules to all levels.
  • Experience of teaching Latin Literature to all levels
