Responsibilities

The incumbent will be responsible for:
  • Primarily teaching in the Law of Evidence, but may also be required to present any of the modules offered by the Department of Procedural Law, in order to meet the needs of the Department as required, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level;
  • Conducting academic and scholarly research;
  • Possess an in-depth understanding of specialisation to enable the development of new knowledge, innovation and understanding within the field;
  • Supervising masters and doctoral students;
  • Mentoring students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Performing academic administration and management;
  • Performing other duties as delegated by the Head of the Department.


Minimum Requirements

Lecturer:
  • At least an appropriate Masters' degree;
  • An admitted Attorney or Advocate of the High Court of South Africa.


Senior Lecturer:
  • An appropriate LLD degree;
  • At least five years' teaching experience including curriculum development at a tertiary; educational institution;
  • Evidence of successful supervision of postgraduate students;
  • Participation in academic conferences, seminars and workshops;
  • An admitted Attorney or Advocate of the High Court of South Africa;
  • At least eight accredited publications of which three should have been published in the three years preceding the year of application.


Required Competencies (Skills, Knowledge and Behavioural Attributes)

At both levels:
  • Ability to plan and initiate discipline-related research;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a dynamic team;
  • Appropriate communication skills;
  • Excellent presentation skills.


Added Advantages and Preferences

Lecturer:
  • Relevant teaching experience including curriculum development at a tertiary educational institution;
  • At least two substantial publications in peer-reviewed journals or scholarly books in the past three years;
  • Evidence of community engagement being embedded in the candidate's research and/or teaching;
  • Relevant academic administration experience.


Senior Lecturer (same as for Lecturer, plus):
  • Conference papers delivered;
  • Proven record of academic administration and academic citizenship. This could include the following:
    • Participation in departmental committees;
    • Faculty committee participation;
    • Journal review and editing.


The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
