Job Purpose

Based in the Edgbaston campus, the postholder will lead the last stage of the existing EPSRC project RRAH19190 EP/N021746/1 and will plan and prepare for the new EPSRC proposed Project EP/S031596/1. The main task for the postholder is to conduct and complete theengine emission testing using the EU new engine testing protocol/driving cycle (namely WLTC) with potential capability of RDE testing based on the upgraded AVL PUMA system (to be upgraded during the year).

The postholder's duties will include planning and developing research contributions to the subject area using methodologies, critical evaluations, interpretations, analyses and other appropriate techniques through correct interpretation of the project objectives. They will propose and contribute to the development of research techniques, models and methods in collaboration with colleagues; contribute to writing bids for research funding; analyse and interpret data and generate ideas based on outcomes; and coordinate with industrial partners and suppliers.

The postholder will be expected to achieve agreed research objectives/targets in a timely manner, involving 'hands-on' implementation of the research plan in general. They will present/disseminate research findings using appropriate and effective media such as publication, research seminars etc, involving the preparation of research reports and technical papers. They will also supervise students on research related work, provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate and contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods.

Person Specification
  • Hold, or be close to completion of, a PhD in Vehicle Engineering
  • Demonstrably sufficient breadth and depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline and or research methods and techniques to work within an established research centre engaged in research of engine/vehicle technology
  • Demonstrable understanding of engine control and testing, concerning performance and emissions
  • Demonstrable knowledge of LabView or MATLAB
  • Demonstrable knowledge and research experience of AI and algorithms
  • Demonstrable high level analytical capability
  • Proven ability to communicate complex information clearly with good communication skills (both oral and written)
  • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/ administration processes
  • Demonstrable good presentation skills (in both oral and writing).
