Aga Khan University was established in 1983 as an international university with an objective to promote human welfare in general, and the welfare of the people in the countries in which it operates, by disseminating knowledge and providing instruction, training, research and service in the health sciences, education and such other branches of learning as the University may determine. Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) is a Department dedicated to develop a center of excellence for high quality and high impact clinical trials both nationally & internationally. The Department promotes AKU's vision by providing leadership, consultation and facilitation in different phases of clinical trials in compliance with the International Standards and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines.

The Aga Khan University invites applications for the position of Research Associate, Clinical Trials Unit.

Responsibilities

You will be responsible to perform both clinical and administrative tasks under supervision of research investigators and CTU supervisor. Tasks may include but not limited to:
  • plan, organize, and engage in the day to day clinical and related research study activities under the direction of, and in consultation with the CTU supervisors
  • review research protocols, plan daily tasks and daily study flow of 'booked studies' in conjunction with the Research Assistant, Laboratory technologist and study-specific coordinator
  • assist the Clinical Coordinator in directing the daily flow of patients and study related tasks
  • facilitate/provide care of research patients within the CTU's scope of its central support services to investigators and study coordinators
  • perform routine technical procedures such as patients' vital signs, I/V cannulation, ECG, , policies and procedures for approved research protocols
  • provide laboratory support services including phlebotomy and collection/handling of required specimens using standard techniques and processing of specimens
  • provide emergency nursing care/support (crash cart management, infection control procedures etc.), according to professional standards and practices, and in compliance with the policies and procedures of the CTU
  • practice ICH-GCP as well as ensure compliance of ICH-GCP by CTU staff and users of CTU
  • ensure compliance of established safety standards and maintain safe environment for patients, families, and clinical staff in accordance with regulatory and institutional health standards
  • oversee the management, stocking and maintenance of clinical space including management of clinical supply inventories, ordering and appropriate stocking of examining/clinical rooms; ensure servicing and maintenance of medical/clinical equipment, maintain service logs
  • coordinate study patient visit schedules with study research coordinators/CTU clinical team
  • orient patients/visitors with the policies of the CTU during their stay
  • document and maintain accurate records (such as, patients' assessment, subject specific specimens collected, specimen custody, specimen storage records, supply inventories, temperature logs etc.) as part of source documentation, regulatory, research and institutional requirements
  • ensure appropriate handling, disposal of biological and hazardous specimens/materials.


Requirements

You should have:
  • Masters/Bachelors level in Nursing or in any relevant Health Field (e.g. D Pharm) with three years clinical experience
  • excellent knowledge in nursing practice, critical thinking, and problem solving skills
  • sound working knowledge of Good Clinical Practices (GCPs), clinical trial processes, nursing patient care, biomaterials handling, health safety practices
  • prior experience in operating basic medical equipment (eg. Infusion pump, ECG machine etc)
  • excellent interpersonal skills and communication ability - written and verbal in English and Urdu
  • excellent organizational capabilities and ability to handle diverse set of tasks for multiple studies simultaneously
  • maturity & ability to work independently; versatility to work in a variety of related roles such as clinical/nursing care, patient services support, lab/bio-specimen processing, data management
  • proficiency in use of computers and basic office software
  • maintain strict confidentiality as per Unit's policies
  • possess strong attributes to work in Team setting.
